5th Floor - Right To Left

Some 5th floor music to get you acquainted with their sounds before Sunday.

Plus here is some information on the group and their vibe.

5th Floor is a 12 strong Cape Town hip-hop outfit that was assembled in 1996. '04/'05 saw the crew release their debut album called Attention To Detail. 5th Floor then independently launched a second album called “Sex & Revolution” in March '09 through So Treal Music.

Sex & Revolution is Camo & Kasual T accompanied by a 4 piece band.

The crew performs and produces hip-hop music, as well as providing platforms for urban-art expression within their immediate community.

5th Floor is a proud product of their environment and to reflect their heritage they have chosen poetry & live music as their medium. Their lyrics reveal meaning in everyday life while drawing on lessons from our common ancestry.

In keeping with the ethics of real music the 5th Floor encourages Knowledge-Of-Self. This is an element that has motivated and inspired the crew in many ways. The relevance of universal concepts apply to the local and abroad underprivileged communities where there is a large hip hop audience.

Collectively the Fifth Floor Unit has shared platforms with artist world wide. The caliber ranges from poets like Sarah Jones, Timbuktu, Loop Troop to Lesego Rampoalekeng, artists like Tumi & the Volume to Black Thought of The Roots, Zaki Ibrahim, John Robinson, People Under The Stairs, Slum Village, Talip Kweli through to outfits like Blk Sonshine, MXO and Bongo Muffin.

The presence of 5th Floor has been felt globally. Their work appeared in the award- winning graffiti documentary “Over Spray” & they have shared platforms with artist in all elements of the culture. Thesis Social Jam Session is featured in The latest Shook Magazine. This issue is largely dedicated to South Africa and was done before the World Cup and features other prominent players in the South African music landscape, both underground and commercial. We proud of this achievement as it has helped us spread the love. Thanks to Jez, Sam and Ben from Shook magazine and Allan Nicoll aka Kid Fonque for the shook up.

South Africa has got it going on right now. Forget football (the country’s footballing heritage was decimated by apartheid), in 2010 it’s South Africa’s young party starters, streetwear entrepreneurs, dance music moguls, grassroots organizations, and Pan-African publishers who are attracting the eyes of the world.

South Africa has never considered itself anything but a First World country and this is what a new generation is out to prove. In our special South Africa issue, headline artists BLK JKS meet guitar hero Dr. Phillip ‘Malombo’ Tabane; international dance music stars Black Coffee and Culoe de Song provide an entry point into the ubiquitous house music scene; and in the beating heart of Soweto we meet the country’s future leaders. We also revisit the radical 1960s jazz players through Basil Breakey’s photography, the multi-racial 1980s hip-hop movement in Cape Town and highlight new movements like the Pan African Space Station.

Wireless G doing it Big

Our resident DJ and fellow creative, wireless_G is doing it big with his second international gig this year. He will be opening up the Blu and Exile gig happening this Saturday at Townhall (Old Song writers Club in Newtown). Also billed to play are Tumi (from TATV), 5th floor (The night before TSJS), XO. Joining G on the decks will be Raiko and Akio ID all the way from CPT. Show love and support for this gig. Tickets are R120 at the door and pre sold for R100 at Grayscale store in Brammfontein.

TSJS Tribute to Stan

Stan The Man with the plan.... This session is dedicated to Stanley Parkies our first host. He has passed on, but the beat must go on and this is our farewell to him.

In order to keep things fresh and expose new people to the streets, we have a live act line up with two groups that have never performed in Soweto before and its a blessing that we have them with us. First is Bongiziwe Mabandla and The Fridge. This is a three guita...rist band that sings folk music. 5th Floor is a hip hop duo from the streets of Cape Town that is breathing fresh air to the hip hop infested market of South Africa. They have already blessed Party People hosted by DJ Kenzhero.

On the DJ line up we have the Residents, Khumza with a selection dedicated to Stan, Omi ( On a visit from Durban), Skindeep who last graced the decks last year and Wireless_G our WWUD (Worldwide Under Ground) DJ.

Our Host is Tall Ass Mo and he will be keeping you laughing with Skhumba. These two comedians are bubbling under the surface in the comedy circuit of South Africa.

Theodore DeReese "Teddy" Pendergrass (March 26, 1950[1] – January 13, 2010[2]) was an American R&B/soul singer and songwriter. Pendergrass first rose to fame as lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes in the 1970s before a successful solo career at the end of the decade. In 1982, he was severely injured in an auto accident in Philadelphia, resulting in his being paralyzed from the waist down. After his injury, the affable entertainer founded the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance, a foundation that helps those with spinal cord injuries. Pendergrass commemorated 25 years of living after his spinal cord injury with star filled event, Teddy 25 - A Celebration of Life at Philadelphia's Kimmel Center. His last performance was on a PBS special at Atlantic City's Borgata Casino in November 2008.

THESIS Retro tops & I Love Soweto hoodies @ Thesis Concept Store

Hi there winter babies! Braving the chill is the “in” thing this winter, so I hope you buckled up well for the season storms; hitting the southern hemisphere like crazy! If not here’s a couple of what we call: the Retro tops The I love Soweto hoodies from THESIS @ the THESIS Concept Store. The tops came in black with red trimmings & there were red tops with black trimmings. The hoodies in beige & navy with red trimmings.

Then an inspiration of hosting the most massive tournament on the planet; bit us & we decided to honour our flag with the last edition of the tops. While we everyone 100% behind bafana bafana: the boys hopes were dashed after just two innings! We at the concept of instilling hope back into the people & reminding them that we are still South Africans. These ones were done in the spirit of Pride & honour! In black; laced in red; blue; green & yellow trimmings. Green in red; yellow,green & black trimmings...

TSJS Two Years Anniversary Session...!

Hip Hip Hoooray! Thesis Social Jam Session is turning two years. Yes it’s only been two years it feels like we’ve been jamming a life time. From the early days when we jammed inside Thesis Concept Store, to yesterday when we jammed outside and braving the winter blues, to today when we are lounging in couches with heaters and stretch marquees with the “never compromising” good music. It’s been a great journey.

Happening every first Sunday of the month, at Mofolo Village in Soweto with music as the foundation, The DJ booth has been endowed by big guns and prominent contests from DJ Oil(France), Kid Fonque, The Wedding DJs, DJ Mdoo, Nathi Quwe, Music At Last, Paledi; The Layders; PO(US) and now Khenzero. Live performances; breed intensity between the crowd and performers. The best performances by Motlatsi; Future History; The Name Is Taken; Dirty Paraffin; Babu; P2DHI(US); Reebirth; Mnandi Blues & the list goes on and on and on...

TSJS is setting the world on fire on The 1^st of August, to celebrate its second birthday. DJ Khenzero will be our guest, also on the guest list is DJ Nana; Deep Soweto will be in the space; very large regular; feeding you home-grown kasi hip hop. Nature will be coming back to make us glad to be here: listening to the music. For the second time; on our 2nd birthday. Our resident DJ’s keeping the residential suite sweet as they welcome you and our guest performers to arrive. Springer; Omi and Wireless G deserve their own sentence of sweet melodies.

Omi has been with us from the beginning, since 3 August 2008. Known to the TSJS crew as historian DJ. He plays a sound with soul & the knowledge of its history. What ever you want to know about what he’s playing: he’ll tell you; just listen to his mix and his biggest influence is Giles Peterson (another great historian). Wireless G has been a great part of the residence. His play is fresh and futuristic. I’m not even saying playing futuristic stuff; but he illustrates a new point of about the DJing concept; conceptual and a hard core brand manager. Springer on the other hand has been a playing friend for a while now since the jams started. Took several months to get ready to join our ship of reverberates. His new, fresh and a break beat or two.

Liquid Gamz will be gaming on them PS3 consoles for your entertainment. Nyambose’s kitchen; next door; will food us till we close; we know how hungry the sounds of TSJS can make us.

back in the days it was all Goapele and Now I present to you:

Mpho Skeef: (her name meaning gift in South Sotho ) was born of a mixed couple in South Africa at the height of the struggle against apartheid. She then spent her first birthday in jail when her mother was arrested. Her biological father is none other than renowned South African musician Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse. Mpho or should I say "Mphoza" grew up listening to a wide variety of artists from Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, and John Coltrane, to Parliament, Prince and Fela Kuti. Alongside this premier list her parents encouraged her love of World Music (modern electronica and pop music, a staple diet including hip hop and R&B artists from KRS1 to NWA, Chaka Khan to Mary J as well as Rock) and Electronica from Daft Punk to Kate Bush.

In the 80's, her mother and stepfather (percussionist Eugene Skeef) fled to South of London; Brixton where Mpho still lives. After leaving secondary school she joined the newly opened Brits Academy. Fellow students during the two-year period included the late Lynden David Hall, and Floetry. She has appeared alongside artists such as Ty, The great: Eska, Terri Walker as well as mainstream artists like Ms Dynamite and Natasha Beddingfield. Most recently she provided the lead vocals for the Bugz In The Attic smash “Booty La La”, (voted record of the year 2004 by listeners of Giles Petersons World Wide show ) She is also featured on the ColdCut album “Sound Mirrors”. In 2005 she released the “Don't Like You” EP to critical acclaim, and this year she follows up with her debut.

Ever since the first, official, FIFA World Cup soccer ball in 1970. There’s nothing like ours; Jabulani. Meaning “let us be happy”; made in the spirit of Ubuntu. He a stud in a beshu on an Armani suit & and laced in imbatata. I love it, apparently its a “ Grip n’ Groove, exceptionally great in flight & perfect for all weather conditions. It’s got 8, new thermally, bonded 3D panels. Moulded for the sphere, perfectly round & more accurate than ever. What can we say; these are the peps of being the latest in the market.

It comes after a generation of champions. You got to have balls man!!! First of these bally stalwarts is the Buckminster, apparently the black& white, 32 panelled descendent was only visible on black & white TV. That was the Mexican World Cup in 1970.

Chile Durlast the prince who was not meant to be a king was introduced in 1974. Tango Durlast was placed in the centre field in Argentina in 1978, as candidate design for more of its kind to come.

Tango Durlast set a pattern trend for next ball; the Tango Espana in the 1982 Spanish World Cup. The first edition of water resistant ball with a rubber inlaid over the seams. The rubber unfortunately had a disadvantage. It started to wear off after a short time of kicking & it had to be always replaced during the match. Last of its kind.
In 1986 in Mexican World Cup rolled out the first polyurethane coat, Azteca. Its the synthetic ball, which was good on wet & hard places. Rain resistance was the number one priority for Adidas.

The polyurethane continued its technological journey in the balls. In 1990; in the Italian World Cup; black polyurethane foam in layered ball; Etrvsco; was introduced.

Adidas felt at home with polyurethane. In 1994 in the USA World Cup; Questra; with an enveloped layer of polystyrene foam; was kicked to the next level. Let alone being more waterproof, but this made the have more acceleration, it had softer touch to it, control & higher velocity during gaming.

Followed after 4 years was there Tricolore in the hands of a captain in the France World Cup; in 1998. It had the French red, white & blue tri- colour. It deviated from the traditional black & white patterns. Using under glass print technology; the first colored official World Cup ball had a thin layer of syntactic foam. It inspired the next era of balls.

The era evolved in its own right; by coming up with the Fevernorva in the Korea Japan 2002. Adidas pulled it off again presenting a thicker layered for more accuracy in the flight of the new ball. The patterns resembled a blade; to cut through the air. It was a real pretty boy...

After the pretty boy, there was the handsome German; the Teamgeist. It was unveiled at the 2006 German World Cup. It was all new, made for the 21st century footballers. Complete with gold & silver patterns.

Football is such a great sport, we love it in South Africa. Unlike the way football is played in Europe: here in South Africa posses prowes, flair, trickery & top class players. We feeling it! What about you?

I can tell you now that: there isn’t any time as the time now. Its the 2nd wave of the best year in South Africa after the Rugby World Cup... The FIFA World Cup is in our country from the 11 June to 11 July & its football frenzy this side of town. One of the places synonymous with Joburg is SOWETO. Starting the kick off on 6 June 2010 is the TSJS( THESIS Social Sessions, for those who are not familiar with acronym). A dope line up is full Of LOVE. Chuck D from the Deep Soweto stable will be punching them lines like there’s no tomorrow. We got Babu; a band from Cape Town, a new resident Dj who goes by the name of Springer, I’m sure he’s was knighted for a reason. Our guest dj for the evening is Hypenoid. Talking about LOVE: the “ I LOVE SOWETO” campaign is still embroiled in our love for beautiful things, the next concept is still ready for action soon. It’s an evening of great music & people.
